Now it's years later, and immortal cookies are commonplace among search engines; Google set the standard because no one bothered to challenge them. This cookie places a unique ID number on your hard disk. Anytime you land on a Google page, you get a Google cookie if you don't already have one. If you have one, they read and record your unique ID number. 2. Google records everything they can: For all searches they record the cookie ID, your Internet IP address, the time and date, your search terms, and your browser configuration. Increasingly, Google is customizing results based on your IP number. This is referred to in the industry as "IP delivery based on geolocation." 3. Google retains all data indefinitely: Google has no data retention policies. There is evidence that they are able to easily access all the user information they collect and save. 4. Google won't say why they need this data: Inquiries to Google about their privacy policies are ignored. When the New York Times (2002-11-28) asked Sergey Brin about whether Google ever gets subpoenaed for this information, he had no comment. 5. Google hires spooks: Matt Cutts, a key Google engineer, used to work for the National Security Agency. Google wants to hire more people with security clearances, so that they can peddle their corporate assets to the spooks in Washington. 6. Google's toolbar is spyware: With the advanced features enabled, Google's free toolbar for Explorer phones home with every page you surf. Yes, it reads your cookie too, and sends along the last search terms you used in the toolbar. Their privacy policy confesses this, but that's only because Alexa lost a class-action lawsuit when their toolbar did the same thing, and their privacy policy failed to explain this. Worse yet, Google's toolbar updates to new versions quietly, and without asking. This means that if you have the toolbar installed, Google essentially has complete access to your hard disk every time you phone home. Most software vendors, and even Microsoft, ask if you'd like an updated version. But not Google. 7. Google's cache copy is illegal: Judging from Ninth Circuit precedent on the application of U.S. copyright laws to the Internet, Google's cache copy appears to be illegal. The only way a webmaster can avoid having his site cached on Google is to put a "noarchive" meta in the header of every page on his site. Surfers like the cache, but webmasters don't. Many webmasters have deleted questionable material from their sites, only to discover later that the problem pages live merrily on in Google's cache. The cache copy should be "opt-in" for webmasters, not "opt-out." 8. Google is not your friend: Young, stupid script kiddies and many bloggers still think Google is "way kool," so by now Google enjoys a 75 percent monopoly for all external referrals to most websites. No webmaster can avoid seeking Google's approval these days, assuming he wants to increase traffic to his site. If he tries to take advantage of some of the known weaknesses in Google's semi-secret algorithms, he may find himself penalized by Google, and his traffic disappears. There are no detailed, published standards issued by Google, and there is no appeal process for penalized sites. Google is completely unaccountable. Most of the time they don't even answer email from webmasters. 9. Google is a privacy time bomb: With 150 million searches per day, most from outside the U.S., Google amounts to a privacy disaster waiting to happen. Those newly commissioned data-mining bureaucrats in Washington can only dream about the sort of slick efficiency that Google has already achieved. Thank you, Daniel Brandt PIR president &

US Census Bureau%GCI LEFT BLANK%WPO LEFT BLANK%LMA LEFT BLANK% Christopher Effgen% There are a few stories about what happened. There are my stories, what happened to me. There is the story of what the Census Bureau did, and the stories about what happened to the other people involved. There are also stories about the agencies that I complained to, and how they responded to the complaints. There is the story of the Government cover-up and how deep within the administration it goes. At this point I believe that it goes at least to the Attorney General. The story I think you want to hear is the story about is what the Census Bureau did. You can think of the Census Bureau as you would a priest in a confessional. The Census Bureau is the Federal government’s total information agency. The Bureau has access to virtually every bit of information about you, both public and private. In addition the Census Bureau has the power to compel respondents to answer questions truthfully. This access and the power to compel truthful testimony are grants of power, that if not tempered by rules prohibiting the use of the information in courts of law, is the power the Inquisition. To make sure that the information that the Census Bureau was given access to was not used, Congress made a promise to the people of the United States that they could trust the government and made such a use a felony, punishable by five years imprisonment. In preparing to conduct the Year 2000 Census the Bureau had a problem of needing to hire a large number of people quickly. One of the records that we have is a note from a meeting in which the problem was discussed. http://ftp.census.gov/dmd/www/text/pl2000.txt In that meeting it was determined to use the FBI’s named based criminal history system to run named-based background checks on applicants for employment. Yet, because of fears that the FBI would not approve the use of their database for such a purpose, the Census Bureau decided to use their privileged access to that database. This determination meant that every background check performed would be a felony and violation of the trust reposed in the Census Bureau. The determination not to contact the FBI and make an agreement about the use of their database was also a violation of the Privacy Act. The Privacy Act was established to govern the use of personal information by Federal agencies. It came into being in 1974, following the abuses of personal information practiced under the Nixon administration. There are a number of abuses of personally identifiable information by Federal agencies that the Privacy Act was intended to prevent. The Privacy Act is one of the few Federal laws to which the Federal government has waved its immunity. Because it is possible for the Executive branch to wrongly use a persons personal information without their knowledge or consent, the Privacy Act has a statute of limitations that starts when people are informed of the wrongdoing. The Census Bureau simply ignored every requirement of the Privacy Act in establishing its computer-based name-matching program. One of the requirements is for the establishment of data-matching agreements and the establishment of data integrity boards between data source agencies and data recipient agencies. The Census Bureau was right to be concerned that the FBI would not approve the use of the named-based criminal history system for criminal background checks. The reason is that the FBI knows that a named-based criminal history check falsely identifies a person as having a criminal history about as many times as it makes a correct determination. In addition for every hundred people with a criminal history that the system correctly identifies it misses about 12, who use a different name. The Census Bureau was aware that using the FBI’s named-based system would result in the Bureau hiring some applicants with a criminal history. www.house.gov/judiciary/loes0518.htm The total number of violations of specific laws under the Privacy Act the Census Bureau engage in is over seventy. These include at least two criminal violations. The Census Bureau determined to have at least seven applicants for every job opening. The total number of applicants for hire is estimated at around seven million. Because the Census Bureau was aware that the FBI’s named based background check system has an error rate, and did not want to use applicants social security numbers in performing the background check it determine to have applicants complete DoJ/INS Form I-9. This form was originally created to protect those who can lawfully be employed in the United States. On this form employers are required to have employees make a declaration that they can lawfully work in the United States and employers are required to transcribe information from those documents to the form. It is illegal for employers to use the information from that form, and is a law that applies to every entity in every branch of the Federal government. This is where I come into the story. Having been an employer, I knew that it was illegal to require applicants complete the form. I was told that my application would not be accepted unless I completed both the employee and employers sections of the form. To me this evidenced an intention to use the information from the form. The question that naturally arose in my mind was to what purpose would a prospective employer, who happens to be the Census Bureau, use personal information? The answer, to conduct a background check on applicants, came automatically. I then asked myself, what database would the Census Bureau use to conduct such a background check? The answer, the FBI’s named-based criminal history system, also came naturally. As owner of the Disaster Center web site, I have spent years studying the use of databases and disaster communication techniques that are possible in the Digital Age. Here was an issue of central importance to our lives in this new age, which is that the quality of a database can be more important than the quality of our character. I also knew that to construct a named based criminal history system would require that literally tens of thousand of jurisdictions, and many agencies with those jurisdictions, would have to compile their historic data into a database, which would by its complexity result in a huge error rate. I knew that a name is not a positive form of identification, and that compiling local, State, and Federal databases together would result in the error rates compounding. I completed the part of Form I-9 required to be completed by employees, but I refused to complete the part of the form required to be completed by the employer. I and told the person taking the applications that who ever told her not to accept an employment application without a completed Form I-9 had told her to engage in an illegal act. She then took my application and the partially completed Form I-9. The Census Bureau did what it did because it was a more efficient way of hiring applicants. Here too is a problem of the digital age. Given that the Census Bureau had seven million applicants for employment it was cost effective to wrongly deny an estimated 500,000 innocent people of consideration for employment. The Census Bureau did this without their knowledge or consent, and it did this in violation of the trust given to it by Congress. When we consider the number of criminal violations (at least four) and the number of applicants (an estimated seven million) it was and is the greatest crime ever committed by the government of the United States against the people. In their effort to protect the people of the United States from Census takers who may have a criminal history the Census Bureau engaged in approximately twenty-eight million criminal violations. http://ftp.census.gov/dmd/www/text/pl2000.txt www.house.gov/judiciary/loes0518.htm Christopher Effgen 6921 Weimer Anchorage, AK 99502 907-248-8363 host@disastercenter.com &

By doing this, the department can gather all sorts of information and conduct background investigations of airline passengers that otherwise would require court orders. This program is tucked away in what the DOT euphemistically calls the Privacy Act System of Records, Christopher Effgen reports on his Disaster Center Web site. "DOT," Effgen writes, "is proposing that passengers' names be entered into a computer program that will then match their name against names in law enforcement systems of records, financial and transactional databases, public source information, proprietary data, and be used to create risk assessment reports. When a person is identified as being a possible suspect, in violation of any federal, state, territorial, tribal, local, international, or foreign law, the information will be forwarded to the appropriate law enforcement agency. These agencies may also access the database." All of this is being done as part of the department's "risk assessment" for spotting would-be terrorists getting on planes. The database has other uses, of course, as a tool in deciding whether to hire or fire someone, issue a security clearance, make a grant, give a license. The applicants will never know they are being scrutinized through this secret system. &

This means that if you have the toolbar installed, Google essentially has complete access to your hard disk every time you phone home. The only way a webmaster can avoid having his site cached on Google is to put a "noarchive" meta in the header of every page on his site. Surfers like the cache, but webmasters don't. But yet the INS harrasses immigrants, putting them in maximum security prisons, degrading them by performing multiple strip searches- leaving them naked in rooms for hours before they get them clothing (undergarments included) that have been over used. Then the people are thrown into a room for a barage of questions, they usually can't or won't answer, due to cultural differences or the fact that they don't speak english. Then they await trial for what can be years, and are often times sent back to their country of origin to die. &

google%google% google% google% google% Google deserves your nomination for Big Brother of the Year Nominations accepted here during February 2003 only 1. Google's immortal cookie: Google was the first search engine to use a cookie that expires in 2038. This was at a time when federal websites were prohibited from using persistent cookies altogether. 6. Yes, it reads your cookie too, and sends along the last search terms you used in the toolbar. Their privacy policy confesses this, but that's only because Alexa lost a class-action lawsuit when their toolbar did the same thing, and their privacy policy failed to explain this. Search your files for "cookie". There should be at least one associated with each web browser you use. Throw the cookie document away and replace it with a folder having exactly the same name. The browser will not be able to replace it with a real document, and it can't really write any information from the web site to that document. Web sites that I've visited since making such replacements don't mind. One warning, sometimes this can cause trouble if you navigate backwards at a web site store checkout, you get "page not found". MIP LEFT BLANK%Experian% John Ashcroft % Admiral John Poindexter%BRANDEIS LEFT BLANK% Experian collects information on consumers in a "guilty until proven innocent" manner, branding each consumer with a "score" that determines the worthiness of each consumer to participate in critical events such as buying a house, renting an apartment, even acquiring insurance. While Experian hides behind the guise of intellectual property in their nondisclosure of the rules behind the scoring game, it is clear that they use any source of information that they can glean without having to disclose their source, erroneous or not in creating these scores. While they claim to use only data from Social Security numbers, information sometimes transfers from Junior to Senior on reports, and even between non-related individuals who share a name. Also, while they claim not to collect income data for their scoring model, this information is in fact sent into the bureaus in the form of auto loan and other applications, and there appears to be a strange correlation between higher scores and higher income. Individuals with large mortgages and car payments can have bankruptcies on their record and exceed 700 scores, while other individuals with perfect records on credit cards with lower limits and smaller overall expenditures can have challenges reaching a median score. In attempting to eliminate incorrect information from their report, consumers must jump through hoops. They cannot even speak to a representative without an Experian number (a mortgage or auto loan trimerge stating the negative info is not sufficient to be able to call Experian). Information proving the consumer's innocence can no longer be faxed in, and cannot be sent electronically, and there is no accountability on this lack of customer support. &

Goolgle.com%google.com% John Ashcroft% John Ashcroft%BRANDEIS LEFT BLANK% Google deserves your nomination for Big Brother of the Year Nominations accepted here during February 2003 only 1. Google's immortal cookie: Google was the first search engine to use a cookie that expires in 2038. This was at a time when federal websites were prohibited from using persistent cookies altogether. Those newly-commissioned data-mining bureaucrats in Washington can only dream about the sort of slick efficiency that Google has already achieved. Google deserves your nomination for corporate Big Brother of the Year.&

They slipped up recently , admitting that anyone applying to work there had to have the highest level of US department of defence security clearance. One of their software engineers, Matthew Cutts, worked for the National Security Agency. The US equivalent of GCHQ. Though Google's service is generally good I have found, particularly around subjects to do with CIA covert operations in Europe the index propells important sites to the bottom for some unknown reason. I now have to cionduct parallell searches and avoid using Google. Also - - their cache seems to expire instantly if a controversial site has been removed by an ISP. I v much sympathuise with google watch - -which I have tipped off from time to time. The google blog contains none of this info and seems to be run by google itsself! all in all a military style project posing as fun and friendly. They must be stopped. ;-)&

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives%Google% California Governor Grey Davis% Bill Gates% Bruce Schneier% 1. Google's immortal cookie: Google was the first search engine to use a cookie that expires in 2038. This was at a time when federal websites were prohibited from using persistent cookies altogether. Those newly-commissioned data-mining bureaucrats in Washington can only dream about the sort of slick efficiency that Google has already achieved. MIP LEFT BLANK%GCI LEFT BLANK% George W. Bush%LMA LEFT BLANK%BRANDEIS LEFT BLANK% President George W. Bush is the ideal personification of an elitist - and quite blatant about it. Being 'born on 3rd base', he clearly believes in maintaining/enhancing the power of the 'old' money class - the U.S.'s version of 'Kings & Queens'. As a result, Bush views not only other countries with distain, but also his fellow citizens who are not in his 'class'. His idea of a compassionate conservative is like throwing 'scraps to beggars', and the main purpose of his educational initiative is to get the masses up to a minimum level (to read & write is the equivalence of being potty-trained) where they will marginally help the economy instead of hurting the economy via crime and the cost of prisons. Furthermore, his 'any war all the time' foreign policy will create a generation of terrorists who, when biological WMD inevitably become pervasive in the next decade or so, will cause harm to the U.S. that will make 9/11 be a relative 'fire cracker'. Every country in history which has been 'the superpower' has fallen primarily due to one or more arrogant leaders like Bush. The American citizenry who support for Bush's policies apparently think this is just another 'Pearl Harbor' in which we will 'inevitably' be successful - a very short-sighted perspective in this increasingly shrinking world. I can only imagine that China is watching on the sidelines while the U.S. is destroying its good-will throughout the world. At some point they will move on the world stage as the 'good guys' - both politically and economically.&
